Respect….!

The theme for this month is Respect and its importance in all that we do. The project in Ghana has brought together two completely different styles of working together. The more relaxed style of the villagers of Aziedukope and the more structured way of working that we have here in the UK. As Yaarah Schools is working in partnership with the villagers to build solid structures it is important that we respect their culture and way of working whilst introducing them to new ideas that could enhance them.
One of the things the team in the UK thought was important was that the school had representatives that discussed issues regarding the school in Ghana. Aziedukope Primary School now has a building committee that is made up of four men and four women who meet up every first Tuesday of the month.
At the last committee meeting, it was confirmed that the women in the village are using the newly built classrooms to educate the illiterate women of Aziedukope and neighbouring villages. One of the building committee members and also a teacher at the school has volunteered to be the teacher for the women. There are now about 15 women regularly attending the women’s adult education program with around 80 women having registered. Their lessons include basic literacy and writing. The women taking part in the program have also agreed that there will be a donation from the participants towards the funds of the school.
So the two unfurnished classrooms have already been put to very good use. Not only by the primary school but also the members of the village who have seen this as an opportunity to also educate those women interested; and therefore enhancing their future prospects.
Now imagine what could be done if there was a whole school building.
