N’kya Designs

N’kya is a womenswear label established in 2007 by London based designer Sheila Boateng.  Our collections include a range of dresses and separates that reflect the fusion of two very different cultures to create an explosion of unique style and colour.  Based in London but deep rooted in Ghana, Western Africa, N’kya prides itself on being able to create pieces that are unanticipated and exciting.

N’kya’s signature is the use of African fabrics exhibited throughout the collection in the forms of dresses, tops, skirts etc and is mostly mixed with a variety of fabrics such as chiffon and satin.

In order to do our part in the fair trade movement all garments are made in Ghana by highly skilled seamstresses who upon instruction produce pieces that brighten our days and light up our evenings.  This generates a stable source of income for the team and as a direct result N’kya Designs is able to give back to the community from which she originates.

Everything that has the N’kya label exudes not just quality but Sassiness, Sexiness and Style.

This picture was taken back in April 2010 with some of the Class 1 students who had just been given some new t-shirts. new stationary and new learning materials  that had been donated by a Friends of Yaarah Schools.  The smiles on their faces and that of their teacher Miss Ze Belinda says it all.  The location of the picture is one of the current classrooms being used by the students for classes.  The FUSIONITE event on the 6th of September aims to raise enough money to build these children another classroom.  Come and support a good cause with a night filled with fashion, food and music! Lets put some more smiles on faces one classroom at a time!

Musa Okwonga

Musa Okwonga is an acclaimed poet, football writer, musician and promoter. A scholarship student at Eton College, he won the WH Smith Young Writers Competition, the leading national creative writing contest, at the age of 16; he went on to study law at St.John’s College, Oxford, before qualifying as a solicitor at one of the City’s top firms, Lovells, before leaving to pursue a career as a performance poet and author. A front man of fast-rising band Benin City (Outkast meets James Brown), he has performed live on BBC Radios One and Three, and has recited his poetry at the EU Energy Summit before all of Europe’s environment and energy ministers. He is also a co-promoter of PoeJazzi, a night of poetry and music which has been named TimeOut Critic’s Choice No.1 (February 2007) and which received five-star reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2007 and 2008. In 2008 his first football book, A Cultured Left Foot, was nominated for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award; his second book, Will You Manage?, was published earlier this month.

LAMULA ANDERSON

Collection name: Simanyi Elegance

The collection has a mixture of three different but also similar concepts. The traditional dress of the Ugandan women called the Gomasi. I found the Gomasi had very similar features to the Japanese Obi in terms of how it was tied, the visual connection it had such as fabric and colour. My designs handwriting revealed a 1940’s look of elegance in the garments with a slight exaggeration in the shoulder pads.

The word ‘Simanyi’ is from the Ugandan language meaning ‘I don’t know’. I chose this word because originally I didn’t know where my concept was heading.

SONS OF MEN ©

The Sons of Men Spring /summer 2011 trend is inspired by Nomads the journey of man.  The Nomad trend consists of loose fitting silhouettes, which represents freedom, and adventure. Mixing hardwearing denims with light weight jerseys and knits, the collection pushes design details and fabric manipulations to new levels. With a muted colour pallet which can adapt to any mans wardrobe and style.

FUNKE BELLO

Spiralated is inspired by chairs looking a prints and has a modern twist with curvy, twisted seams to extenuate the female form. The colours are clean and fresh, with a combination of fluid flowing crepe and close fit satin/silk stretch fabrics.
