Childrens attempts at taking my pic - not bad!

With the materials now available and the men of the village and some from neighbouring villages ready to start work we began by mapping out where exactly the school would be located.   With that decision out the way and class locations marked out, digging for the foundations begun.  Although when it came to the work we had to keep encouraging them to actually work and stop chatting away about life.   They seemed to have the attitude that ‘when it gets done it gets done so let’s not rush things’, therefore leaving the few dedicated individuals to do all the work until they were ready to chip in.  We had to stop the work and speak to them about the importance of teamwork and cooperation and the pace picked up dramatically! Iron man!

So we left the house in Accra (Ghana’s capital) yesterday at 6.15am and returned home at 11.45pm.  It was a busy day that I for one certainly won’t be forgetting in a hurry! Due to it raining in the morning the ride to the villages’ closest town, Ho was a very cool and relaxed one.  Once we got into town it was decided that the Head teacher and a few of the villagers should do the buying of the main materials to ensure they are given fair prices which they could then try to bargain a better deal for.  With myself and Maire there the fear was the sellers would try and charge us more assuming that as foriegners we have money to spend! We had several people who were willing to help bring the goods to the village including Mr Ironman who is pictured aboved refusing help from anybody that offered! “You see I am strong!” he laughed as I asked him to consider letting some of the others help him.  Read more >>

Leaving a cold and wet London last Thursday (01/04/10) for what I had been told were Ghana’s rays of sunshine I really underestimated the heat!!! With an average of 34 degrees (Celsius) and a cool breeze to accompany – I’m not complaining though! Read more >>
